The 8th Annual Hoops for Hope 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament and H4H Street Vault – Pole Vault Competition raised $12,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Greater Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, Central Ohio Region on Saturday, July 17 at the All Shepherds Lutheran Church in Lewis Center, Ohio.

The 3-on-3 basketball tournament consisted of 26 teams playing on 6 courts with participants divided into 4 age brackets. Twenty-four pole vaulters participated in the pole vault competition, including the reigning state and MAC champions. Local bands British Invasion and County Line Junction provided musical entertainment. Participants enjoyed great food as well as activities like the closest to the pin competition, the 3-point and free-throw contests and the silent auction.
The tournament, organized by Brad and Pam Halley, honors the life of their son Zack. Diagnosed at the age of 16 with a rare form of childhood cancer, Zack set aside his dreams of restoring a Corvette. In 1998, the Make-A-Wish Foundation granted Zack’s heartfelt wish and surprised him with the refurbished car of his dreams.
The Halley family continues to honor Zack’s memory through the Hoops for Hope tournament. To date, they have raised more than $55,000 for local children waiting for their wish to come true. Inspired by the joy brought to Zack from his granted wish, Brad and his family with unbelievable support from All Shepherds Lutheran Church and the central Ohio community organized Hoops for Hope to help to grant the wishes of children just like him.
“The whole experience, what the people at Make-A-Wish did for us, that's something we'll never forget," said Halley. "We're trying to pay forward."
Local wish kids including five-year-old Nicolas, 16-year-old Nathan, and 18-year-old Ellis attended this year’s tournament. Each of their wishes was granted during the past two years from proceeds generated through Hoops for Hope. Nathan brought his granted wish, a drum set, to the tournament and was invited to play six songs with the band County Line Junction. Ellis also brought his dog M.J., who he purchased as a part of his shopping spree wish granted by the Foundation.
“The Hoops for Hope Tournament is an inspiring community event that brings people together to celebrate Zack’s life and spread hope, strength and joy to local wish children,” remarked development officer Cathy Deluca. “We are looking forward to next year’s tournament.”
More than 100 volunteers were present at this year’s Hoops for Hope tournament. Plans for next year’s tournament are already underway.
