When Blaine was 3 years old his parents were given the news that he had a brain tumor and he must under go intense chemo and radiation therapy. After spending his 4th birthday in the hospital Linda, Blaine’s mom, felt she had to do something special for her brave little man, so she referred him to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In August of 2003 Blaine’s treatments finally ended, he was declared “In Remission”, and his hair started growing back!
When Make-A-Wish volunteers Gary & Brandie Bigler went to visit Blaine and his family in rural Sugarcreek, Ohio they weren’t at all surprised when Blaine wished for a pair of cowboy boots, but in true Make-A-Wish style we put together a wish experience to be remembered long after the boots don’t fit anymore!
When the World’s Toughest Rodeo came to Cleveland on February 21, 2004, they were more then willing to turn Blaine into the rootin’ tootinest’ cowboy this side of the Ol' Mississippi. Before the rodeo Blaine had an appointment at Clip-ity Clop Western Store in Brecksville, Ohio where he was met by Wade Yost, saddle bronc rider, and Gizmo the Rodeo Clown, his personal “cowboy consultants”.
The Roberts family, owners of Clip-ity Clop, outfitted Blaine in head to toe cowboy gear, from hat to boots and spurs. His cowboy hat was steamed and curved for a one of kind fit and his belt was branded with his name. His outfit was complete with cowhide chaps and lasso gloves.
That night Blaine and his family were invited "behind the scenes" at the rodeo and had the opportunity to meet all the cowboys competing in the event, as well as, country music star Gary Allen, that evening's performer! The emcee of the rodeo announced to the packed audience that Blaine was the "honorary cowboy of the day" and he was able to participate in the intermission show. He was also invited to sit with all the cowboys during the autograph session following the show! This was truly a wish come true!!
